Morgan felt the warmth of the dog pressed up against her leg, looked into his eyes, and lapped up every second of eye contact! Even as her vision blurred with tears again—this time happy tears—she did not look away from the blue-and-brown-eyed pup. She was so happy and relieved and proud she felt like she might just float away. Jet did it! They did it!

Behind her, everyone watching clapped and cheered as she gave Jet his treat and dropped to her knees to nuzzle him. It might not be the most official response for the end of a successful exercise, but she was so filled with love for this amazing animal she couldn’t help herself. “Oh, Jet!” she said happily. “Good dog.”

Jet licked the salty tears off her cheeks. He felt bigger and stronger than he ever had in his life.

Suddenly Roxanne was beside them. “Congratulations!” She knelt down and put an arm around each of their shoulders. Jet turned his snout and licked the speckled lady’s face, too.

“That was definitely trusting eye contact, Morgan. No question. He’s made the shift. Your work with him has been transformational.”

Morgan beamed at Jet, and then at Roxanne, and then back at Jet. She still couldn’t believe it. He’d looked right at her, holding her gaze. It had felt nothing short of miraculous!

Now her family was crowded around them. Georgia squeezed her daughter’s shoulders. “That was brilliant, Liebling!”

“I can’t believe he got that ball,” Forrest said with a shake of his head. “That thing was up in that tree … like at least five feet up!”

“I guess he has some tree-climbing skills we didn’t know about,” Martin mused.

“I’ve seen that before,” Roxanne said, getting to her feet and stretching her long legs. “But only once; it’s very unusual. Jet is definitely ready to start SAR training in earnest. I think he’s going to be amazing.”

Pedro was wearing a wide smile. “Increíble!” he said in his native Spanish. “He’s going to need a partner with an extra-gentle touch,” he added, thinking aloud. Though the trust Morgan had established was clear, it was still new and fragile. He didn’t want to jeopardize it after all Morgan’s—and Jet’s—hard work. Pedro knew from experience that a firm but tender handler wasn’t always easy to find. It could take him as long to find the right person as it would take Roxanne and Eloise and the rest of the team to get Jet through the core training … months!

Pedro crouched beside Jet, who looked him right in the eye before giving him a lick. “Okay.” Pedro laughed. “I’m on the job.”

After a celebratory pizza dinner at the Sterling house, to which Jet himself was invited, Pedro headed up to his trailer thinking hard about where he might find the right partner for a border collie with a big heart. He’d been considering this off and on, but it hadn’t seriously been on his radar until this afternoon when all signals said go. He made himself a cup of tea and settled at his little dining table with a bag of chocolate chip cookies and his computer.
